Lufthansa Cargo has marked the first touchdown of its new A321 Freighter (A321F) service at Rome Fiumicino Airport, establishing a strategic cargo hub in Italy’s capital to bolster capacity during the peak season.
The new A321F rotation from Frankfurt to Rome adds vital freighter lift alongside the airline’s existing belly cargo services. According to Lufthansa Cargo, the additional capacity is aimed at supporting outbound flows on ITA Airways’ long-haul network, particularly toward high-value destinations in South America.

Rome Fiumicino becomes an increasingly significant gateway for Lufthansa Cargo, following the recent start of its belly cargo partnership with ITA Airways. With strong seasonal demand and limited space on passenger aircraft, the freighter provides a timely solution to help customers meet tight delivery windows across Latin American markets.
The deployment of the A321F reflects Lufthansa Cargo’s evolving short- and medium-haul strategy, leveraging narrow-body freighters for quick regional hops that feed into its wider intercontinental network. The aircraft offers fast turnaround and optimal payload efficiency for cross-border European operations and interline connectivity.

As peak season cargo demand intensifies, Lufthansa Cargo’s presence in Rome supports both regional exports and transit flows — reinforcing its role as a key European cargo integrator with global reach.
