- LATAM Cargo Group, in partnership with Andes Integración Logística, has completed what is understood to be the first premium salmon shipment from South America using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) via the Book & Claim model, marking a step forward in reducing air cargo emissions.
According to AJOT, the shipment, carried out on March 7, 2026, transported more than three tonnes of premium salmon from Chile to the United States for exporter AquaChile. Through the allocation of over 350 litres of SAF, the operation achieved a certified 10 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions, equivalent to 0.6 tonnes for the shipment.
The initiative highlights growing efforts within the air cargo sector to integrate measurable sustainability solutions into time-sensitive supply chains. Using the Book & Claim model, the environmental benefits of SAF can be attributed to specific shipments without requiring the fuel to be physically used on the same flight, enabling scalable and verifiable emissions reductions.
The SAF used in the operation, produced from animal waste residues, delivers emissions savings of approximately 74.7 percent compared to conventional jet fuel, based on current calculation methodologies.
Cristina Oñate, Product Sustainability Manager at LATAM Cargo Group, said the shipment demonstrates how coordinated efforts across the logistics chain can drive tangible progress. “Our goal is to continue expanding access to concrete, traceable, and verifiable solutions based on the use of SAF,” she noted.
Jan-Henrik Hertel, Director of Processes at Andes Integración Logística, added that logistics providers are increasingly playing a role in supporting customers’ sustainability targets, while AquaChile emphasised the importance of integrating environmental improvements into export operations to key markets such as the United States.
