- Ethiopian Airlines marks 80 years of continuous operations, growing from a single 1946 route into Africa’s largest aviation group with a global network.
- The airline’s resilience, particularly its rapid cargo pivot during COVID-19, has reinforced its role as a key logistics backbone for Africa.
- Long-term markets such as Nigeria highlight its strategy of sustained regional connectivity, while ongoing investments in fleet, infrastructure and cargo position it for continued growth.
Ethiopian Airlines has marked 80 years of continuous operations, underscoring a trajectory that has seen the carrier evolve from a single post-war route into Africa’s largest aviation group, and a central player in the continent’s cargo and connectivity landscape.
The milestone traces back to the airline’s inaugural flight in 1946, when a Douglas C-47 connected Addis Ababa to Cairo. Eight decades on, Ethiopian Airlines operates a network spanning more than 140 destinations across five continents, supported by a fleet of over 140 aircraft.

While the anniversary reflects scale, it also highlights a more structural role: the airline’s position as a stabilising force in African aviation and a key enabler of trade flows across the continent.
Ethiopian’s long-term growth has been closely tied to its ability to adapt through disruption , most notably during the COVID-19 crisis, when the airline rapidly converted passenger aircraft into freighters to maintain operations.
That pivot not only sustained the airline during a period when much of global aviation was grounded, but also reinforced its cargo division as a critical logistics backbone. The carrier played a central role in transporting medical supplies, vaccines and humanitarian cargo across Africa, positioning itself as a lifeline for both regional and intercontinental supply chains.
This operational flexibility has become a defining feature of Ethiopian’s model, particularly as cargo continues to underpin network resilience in volatile market conditions.

As part of its anniversary activities, Ethiopian Airlines highlighted Nigeria as one of its most significant long-term markets, reflecting a broader strategy centred on intra-African connectivity.
Speaking during celebrations in Lagos, Firiehiwot Mekonnen, General Manager Nigeria at Ethiopian Airlines, described the country as “not just a destination but a valued partner”, noting that operations began in 1960, shortly after Nigeria’s independence.
