Schiphol takes part in electric cargo plane test
Electric air cargo transport moved a step closer to reality on 29 May when Schiphol participated in the Netherlands’ first test flights involving the fully electric BETA ALIA CX300 cargo aircraft. Organised by e-Smart Avia and industry partners, the trials were designed to assess the operational requirements of electric aviation, including charging infrastructure, airport processes, coordination with Air Traffic Control Netherlands (LVNL), noise performance and deployment across different airports.
The aircraft departed Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and flew via Den Helder Airport and Lelystad Airport to Rotterdam The Hague Airport, followed by a flight to Ostend-Bruges Airport in Belgium on 30 May.
As a major international logistics hub, Schiphol views the initiative as an opportunity to support the development of lower-emission, lower-noise aviation while strengthening the Netherlands’ position in global logistics. The airport is using the trials to gain practical experience with partners and better understand the infrastructure and operational requirements needed to enable commercial electric aviation in the future.
“Participating in these pioneering test flights allows us to gain valuable operational insights and helps prepare the airport ecosystem for the future introduction of commercial electric cargo services,” said a Schiphol spokesperson.
“These trials demonstrate the potential of electric air cargo to reduce emissions and noise while reinforcing the Netherlands’ role as a leading international logistics hub,” the spokesperson added.
Reshaping cargo operations
Frankfurt Airport is another leading example of how sustainability is reshaping cargo operations.
