• Five-year renewal strengthens handling operations across Madrid and Barcelona, covering extensive European and transatlantic routes
• WFS manages up to 350 weekly flights in Madrid and over 25 in Barcelona, supporting Air Europa’s Boeing 737 and 787 operations
• Continued investment in infrastructure, technology and new facilities to improve efficiency, capacity and service quality
Air Europa Cargo, the air cargo business unit of Air Europa, has renewed its agreement with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, for handling management services for its operations in Madrid and Barcelona for a further five years.
WFS was first awarded a contract with Air Europa Cargo in Madrid in 2018, with the partnership later extended to Barcelona in January 2021. The renewed agreement will support Air Europa in consolidating its cargo operations and strengthening service delivery across both key Spanish gateways.
In Madrid, WFS manages cargo carried on up to 350 Air Europa flights per week, connecting domestic Spanish destinations, major European cities, as well as daily services to the United States and South America. In Barcelona, WFS handles over 25 weekly flights for the airline. Air Europa Cargo operates a fleet of Boeing 737 and Boeing 787 aircraft.
Jordi Piqué, General Manager of Air Europa Cargo, highlighted the importance of the partnership in supporting the airline’s long-term growth strategy. He noted that WFS provides the specialised expertise required to align with Air Europa’s focus on advanced technology and continuous process improvement.
“The relationship with WFS means having the right specialised partner as it shares with the company both its vision for the future, based on the implementation of the latest technology, and the continuous improvement of processes,” Piqué said. “The relationship between Air Europa Cargo and WFS has been based on the ongoing pursuit of operational efficiency and the provision of the highest levels of service quality and safety.”
He added that the renewed agreement will further strengthen cargo services across the airline’s diverse network, spanning European routes and key destinations throughout the Americas.
Humberto Castro, Managing Director of WFS in Spain and Italy, said the company remains committed to supporting Air Europa Cargo’s growth while continuing to invest in infrastructure and technology.
“We are proud to be a strategic partner of Air Europa Cargo and look forward to supporting more growth for the airline’s cargo business in Madrid and Barcelona over the next five years,” Castro said. “We remain committed to innovation, using new technologies and sustainability improvements to underpin the quality of service we deliver at both airports.”
WFS currently operates five cargo warehouse facilities in Madrid, covering 17,000 square metres and handling over 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually for more than 30 airline customers. The company has also been awarded a new site by Spanish airport authority AENA to build a sixth facility, expected to open in 2028.
In Barcelona, WFS serves more than 20 airlines and handles over 140,000 tonnes of cargo each year at its 12,000 square metre facility.
