Lviv International Airport could resume operations within weeks once the necessary security conditions are in place, according to the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi.

Sadovyi said both Lviv and Kyiv Boryspil airports remain technically ready to operate, although the reopening of Ukrainian airspace continues to depend on the security situation.

“Both Lviv Airport and Boryspil Airport are in working condition. As soon as the security issues are resolved, I think these airports will be able to resume operations. We are talking about weeks, not months, once the security issues are resolved,” he told RBC-Ukraine.

The mayor did not provide a possible reopening date or details of the security arrangements that would be required.

Sadovyi also addressed a dispute over land close to Lviv Airport that had previously been reserved for its future expansion.

According to the mayor, approximately 70 hectares around the airport were designated for long-term airport development when the facility was built. Agricultural activity was permitted on the land, but permanent construction was restricted.

He said the Sokilnyky local authority later approved plans for approximately 50,000 sq m of residential development intended to accommodate around 8,000 people. Lviv authorities challenged the plans in court, and Sadovyi said the development process is currently blocked.

He argued that protecting the land is essential to the airport’s long-term role and to wider plans for transport infrastructure in the city.

Sadovyi said the European Union is considering a transport development project valued at approximately €10 billion that would support Lviv’s development as a major transport hub.

The proposed programme would include extending European-standard railway infrastructure and creating a connection between Lviv Airport and the city’s main railway station. He also said the UK Department for Transport had recently presented a development concept for Lviv Airport focused on infrastructure rather than residential construction.

The reopening of Ukraine’s airports has been discussed repeatedly during the war, but Sadovyi’s comments underline that technical readiness alone will not determine when commercial flights can resume. Any restart will remain dependent on security assessments and the ability to protect aircraft, passengers, airport employees and surrounding infrastructure.
