Malaysia Airports names Azmil Khalid as new chairman as managing director’s tenure extended
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has appointed veteran businessman Tan Sri Azmil Khalid as its new non-independent non-executive chairman, marking a significant leadership transition at the operator of Malaysia’s main international airports.
The appointment takes immediate effect and comes as the company seeks to maintain momentum on major infrastructure projects and strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.
Azmil succeeds Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, who is stepping down after more than two years in the role following his recent appointment to the board of state investment fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd.
In a statement, MAHB said Azmil brings more than three decades of experience in corporate leadership, infrastructure development and international business.
He currently serves as group chairman of AFA Group, whose subsidiary AFA Prime Bhd holds concessions for the KL-Karak Highway and East Coast Expressway Phase 1. He is also president and chief executive officer of boutique investment firm AFK Group.
His corporate portfolio includes chairmanship of UEM Edgenta Bhd, while he also sits on the boards of Sapura Industrial Bhd, Elridge Energy Holdings Bhd and environmental services company Cenviro Sdn Bhd.
Azmil’s career has been closely associated with large-scale infrastructure and transport projects. Between 2011 and 2017, he served as president and chief executive officer of The AlloyMtd Group and ANIH Bhd, which manages several major highway concessions. Before that, he held senior leadership positions at MTD Capital Bhd, including group managing director and later group president and chief executive officer.
The appointment comes at a pivotal period for MAHB following its privatisation and subsequent delisting from Bursa Malaysia in February 2025. The transaction was carried out by the Gateway Development Alliance consortium, ending the airport operator’s long tenure as a publicly listed company.
The company paid tribute to outgoing chairman Nungsari, crediting him with helping steer MAHB through one of the most consequential periods in its history.
During his tenure, the group undertook a series of operational and structural changes while progressing strategic projects across its airport network. These included major capital expenditure initiatives and terminal expansion programmes at Penang International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
MAHB said Nungsari’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the company through its privatisation exercise, a process that reshaped the ownership structure of one of Malaysia’s most strategically important infrastructure operators.
The leadership changes come as airports across the Asia-Pacific region continue to experience growing passenger traffic and increasing pressure to expand capacity and improve service standards.
Separately, MAHB announced that the Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) has approved a two-year extension of managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani’s tenure.
The extension will take effect on 1 August 2026 and is intended to provide continuity within the company’s executive leadership team.
MAHB said retaining Izani would help ensure the uninterrupted implementation of ongoing strategic initiatives while maintaining operational stability across its airport network.
