Corporación Quiport has announced the completion of a transformative expansion project at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, delivering the largest upgrade to Ecuador’s main gateway in recent history.

With an investment of $74.2 million, the airport’s capacity has been increased from 5 million to more than 7 million passengers per year. The project, which began in 2019 and resumed in 2024 after a pandemic-related pause, strengthens the country’s air connectivity and infrastructure resilience.
Key features of the project include:
-
17,647 square meters of additional terminal space
-
35,000 square meters of new apron area
-
Expanded international arrivals and departures zones
-
Increased check-in counters and operational areas
-
A new pre-boarding lounge with seating for 350 passengers
-
Additional aircraft parking positions
-
Infrastructure to support future expansion of the International VIP Lounge
The work was completed in just 17 months by Ecuadorian construction firm Ekron and a network of local contractors. It generated more than 500 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs, and was delivered with zero serious accidents, thanks to strong health and safety protocols.
As part of its sustainability goals, the project achieved EDGE certification—a global benchmark for energy and water efficiency in construction. This makes it the first airport project in Ecuador to receive this recognition.
Operational readiness was ensured through close collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, security agencies, and other airport stakeholders, enabling a seamless transition to the upgraded facilities.
“The expansion of Quito Airport is a clear signal of optimism, growth, and long-term vision,” said Corporación Quiport. “It reflects our continued commitment to the city, the country, and to service excellence at Ecuador’s main gateway.”
